Shadow of the Hun
- SHADOW OF THE HUN - A black ink drawing using zip-a-tone on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears on the cover of the fanzine, "Shadow of the Hun," edited and published by George Hamilton in 1975.
When I was learning to draw I was also learning about all the different kinds of papers, pencils, inks, and drawing "tools" that were available, and one of the special papers I came upon was, "Zip-a-tone".
Zip-a-tone sheets came in a variety of patterns, from fine, medium or large dots, or with squiggle patterns of all kinds. You cut a shape of your design in the sheet, peeled it off and pressed it down on your drawing paper.
In this drawing I used a zip-a-tone paper with fine dots to make the "flare" that you see emanating from O'Brien and his horse. I also used other dot size zip-a-tone papers on the horse and on O'Brien and his "gear". And if you look at the axe blade you will see a zip-a-tone paper that has a "graduation" to the dots which gives the effect of "shading".
I only used zip-a-tone paper at the beginning of my learning period. It seemed like more work than it was worth, I preferred doing the shading with my pencil.
